Workshop “Art, Activism and Equality: Bridging Gender Equality and Peacebuilding”, by Shpëtim Selmani & Attila Antal

By Activities

September 26 & 27, 2024

Artpolis, in cooperation with the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, KulturHaus Brotfabrik from Austria and Kulturanova from Serbia, with the support of the European Union, organized the artistic workshop “Art, Activism and Equality: Bridging Gender Equality and Peacebuilding” in Pristina, during the FemArt Festival, 13th edition.

The workshop aimed to challenge gender stereotypes, address human rights issues and promote peace building in the region. This was achieved through a methodology that involved gathering qualitative data in the form of ‘counter-narratives’ and personal stories. Based on the collected stories and collaboration during the workshop, the creation of a theatrical performance was initiated.

During the workshop, the participants’ skills to write short texts were also developed.

The workshop was directed and facilitated by two artists, Shpëtim Selmani, actor, playwright, writer and Attila Antal, theater and film director, composer and theater researcher.

Up to 25 young men and women, boys and girls with different profiles, over the age of 18 participated in the artistic workshop. Albanian-Serbian-Albanian translation was provided throughout the workshop.

This workshop was organized by Artpolis – Art and Community Center within the FemArt Festival, in partnership with The Helsinki Committee for the Human Rights in Serbia, Kulturhaus Brotfabrik/Austria and Kulturanova/Serbia, with the financial support of the European Union.

Doing artistic research

By Activities

Collecting stories via interviews

In summer 2024 the project team kicked off the artistic research phase of UNMASC by starting to collect stories and experiences of various persons and experts. The partners were free to employ semi-structured interviews, narrative interviews, and/or focus groups. The selection of the method was based on the research question(s) the partners were interested to explore.

Different perspectives on gender justice and role expectations were collected from individual persons and experts. The most relevant parts of the interviews and focus groups were documented in order to use them further in the artistic process of UNMASC.

Exploring gender via theatre/performance workshops

In the next phase of the artistic research the partners facilitated theatre workshops. Different theatre professionals brought in their expertise on devised theatre, physical theatre, and participatory processes. The workshops were a vehicle to collect stories and experiences of individuals through different outputs in the workshop activities but also through observation and reporting on the workshops.

The workshops promoted and explored gender and sexuality, including:

  • enhancement of the participants’ expressiveness,
  • promoting empathy, and understanding,
  • addressing social issues through theatrical exploration.

Through engaging activities and practical exercises, participants were empowered to express themselves authentically and contribute meaningfully to the theatrical process.

In the upcoming moths the partners are working on the production of performances inspired by the various perspectives collected via interviews and theatre workshops.

The second transnational meeting of the UNMASC project is held!

By Activities
The second transnational meeting for the “Unmasc! Promoting Gender Justice with Socially Engaged Theatre” project took place in a welcoming and public space at OPENS in Novi Sad, further strengthening the collaboration between the partners: Kulturhaus (Vienna), Artpolis (Prishtina), and the host, Kulturanova (Novi sad).
Held on June 16 and 17, the partner organizations presented their achievements thus far, discussed their plans, and outlined the next steps for the project’s implementation.
Both the project managers and artists from the three organizations collaborated, exchanging artistic ideas on topics such as artistic research, designing theater workshops, co-creating the co-facilitated modules for the residencies, communication, evaluation, and learning from each other as per the agenda.
Additionally, the meeting included a capacity-building workshop where participants engaged in artistic creation. This involved sharing personal stories through various creative exercises, responding to thought-provoking questions, and constructing theater scenes around a fictional character in the “hot seat.”
The workshop was led by Attila Antal, a member of Kulturanova and a distinguished theater and film director, composer, and theatrologist. The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Pristina.

Artpolis participated in the panel discussion “Art as a Tool for Overcoming Stereotypes”

By Activities
On June 17, 2024, in Novi Sad, partners from the “UNMASC! Promoting Gender Justice with Socially Engaged Theatre” project—Artpolis (Prishtina), Kulturhaus Brotfabrik (Vienna), — took part in a panel discussion titled “Art as a Tool for Overcoming Stereotypes.” This event was part of the Festival of Reconciliation, themed “Dare to Reconcile” organized and led by the third partner of the project, Kulturanova (Novi Sad).
Panelists included Tilman Fromelt, Danilo Jovanović, Andrea Visotshnig, Venera Ismaili, and Shpetim Selmani. The panel was moderated by Milan Vračar and Jelena Božić.
The discussion focused on how art and culture play a significant role in breaking down stereotypes, prejudices, and xenophobia. These tools foster discussion, creativity, dialogue, and the acceptance of diversity, which are particularly important for the Western Balkans and beyond for promoting peaceful coexistence among young people.
Key points from the discussion included: Art and culture are effective in driving positive social change through micro-activism; activism and art are intertwined and enhance the reach and impact of social messages; youth mobility, personal experiences, and networking are crucial for skill and knowledge exchange.
Panelists agreed that young people are vulnerable to negative narratives and need support through cultural and artistic engagement. They noted and accounted numerous activities and actions of the Serbia-Kosovo collaborations involved joint artistic projects.
For future progress, the panelists emphasized the need for new formats, more institutional support, and stronger networking among activists in the civil sector.
